What is travel insurance, and do I need it?
Travel insurance, also known as holiday insurance, helps cover the cost if something goes wrong before or during your trip. It’s not usually a legal requirement, though some countries won’t let you in without proof of cover and many cruise lines will ask to see it before you board.
Cover can start from the day you buy, not the day you fly. So, if illness or bereavement stops you going, you could claim back money you’ve already spent on flights and hotels. Once you’re away, policies typically cover emergency medical treatment, getting you home if you’re too unwell to fly, and your luggage.
Limits, exclusions and medical cover can differ hugely from one insurer to the next. So, it can pay to compare. That’s where we come in. With PayingTooMuch, you can compare travel insurance quotes from a panel of specialist providers, including brands you won’t find on other sites.
Whether you plan on going on a long trip around the world, cruising in the Caribbean, or flying to Paris on a weekend trip, travel insurance is built to protect you if something unexpected happens. To find a great deal for your trip, compare travel insurance quotes to make sure you get complete protection.
What’s usually covered?
Cancellations and delays – if you’re stranded or are unable to travel
Repatriation – if you need to get home if medically necessary
Lost, stolen or damaged luggage and personal items – if you need to recover belongings and replace passports
Medical emergencies – if you need to cover costs for sickness and need medical care
Travel disruptions – if you're impacted by a natural disaster or a strike
Personal liability – if you're held responsible for causing bodily injury or property damage to a third party
It’s important that you declare any pre-existing medical conditions, so that you’re fully covered during your trip.
What isn’t covered?
Accidents related to alcohol or drugs – having an accident while under the influence will often lead to an unsuccessful claim
A medical condition you should’ve declared – if you fail to tell your insurance provider about your medical condition, you might not be protected if something goes wrong
Choosing not to travel – simply deciding not to go on your trip is not reason enough to make a claim
Travelling against the advice of your doctor – if you choose to not listen to your doctor and travel anyway, your claim could be denied
Travel for medical treatment – you can’t get support for pre-arranged treatments, only unexpected emergencies
Travelling against FCDO advice – most policies won’t cover you if the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises against all or all but essential travel to your destination
But it only covers state treatment. It won’t cover repatriation, which is the cost of getting you home when you’re too unwell to fly as booked. It does nothing for a cancelled trip, a delayed flight or luggage that doesn’t arrive. And outside of the countries we’ve just named, it does nothing at all. The right travel insurance policy will be able to fill these gaps.”

Compare travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions
Going on holiday should be exciting, but if you’re travelling with pre-existing medical conditions like cancer, heart conditions or diabetes, finding the right insurance can feel like the hardest part of the whole trip. You might end up paying more for it too – so it’s worth looking at more than one brand.
Tell us about your conditions when you get a quote, and we’ll only show providers who can cover them. Most policies include emergency medical cover and repatriation as standard, meaning you can be protected against the eye-watering costs of being taken ill or injured abroad, and covered to fly home if you need extra seats, a medical escort or an air ambulance.

You can usually buy travel insurance right up until you leave the country.
What our expert says…
“You can usually buy travel insurance right up until you leave the country. But cancellation cover – that's the part protecting money you’ve already paid for things like deposits and pre-paid activities – only kicks in from the day your policy starts. That’s why MoneySavingExpert’s Martin Lewis recommends buying ASAB: As Soon As you Book.
Buying early means you’re covered in the run-up to your holiday, not just while you’re away. Think a broken leg before you fly, a parent or child taken into hospital, redundancy, or even jury duty (subject to exact policy terms). Taking out your policy in a last-minute rush could mean missing out on weeks or months of valuable protection.
Remember, once you’ve left the country, or something’s already gone wrong, it’s too late to buy cover.
”
How much is travel insurance?
The price of travel insurance can vary, as it’s based on several factors, including age, health issues and destinations.
Age
Older travellers tend to face higher medical claim risks, which can increase the price of a policy. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find quality cover with us. You can easily compare travel insurance for over 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.
Medical conditions
You may have to pay a higher cost if you have pre-existing medical conditions. You’ll have to declare your health conditions when getting a quote to make sure you’re offered the right policy for you.
Where you’re travelling to
Planning on city hopping in the US or going on a safari in the Serengeti? Where you travel will influence the cost of your travel insurance. Some countries require higher limits because their healthcare is more expensive. You may also have to pay more if you’re travelling to a destination that has a higher chance of experiencing natural disasters.
The length of your trip
Longer trips mean more potential claims, regardless of where you decide to travel.
Compare, compare, compare: Quotes for the same trip and same traveller can vary hugely between insurers. Use a travel insurance comparison website like us to find a great policy at a great price point without the hassle.
Opt for annual insurance if you’re travelling more than once: Going away multiple times this year? An annual multi-trip policy can cover the lot over 12 months, and often works out cheaper than buying separate policies for each holiday.
Check your region: We’ll sort the regions for you when you compare with us. But it’s worth knowing that some insurers count places like Morocco, Egypt and Turkey as Europe, which can bring the price down compared with a worldwide policy.
Consider a policy with a higher excess: That’s the bit you pay towards a claim. Choose a higher number and the premium will usually come down – as long as it’s an amount you’d be able to contribute should the worst happen.
Declare everything: Declaring something like a pre-existing medical condition from a year ago might add a little to your premium, but leaving it out could cost you a whole claim down the line.
Combine travellers on one policy: If you’re travelling as a couple, family or group, it might cost less to put everyone on the same policy. With us, you can get cover for a group of up to ten people online.

Joanne Dale,
Other travellers often ask...
If your flight's cancelled, your travel insurance might not be your first port of call. Under UK law and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations, if your flight’s cancelled by the airline, they’re legally obligated to either provide a full refund or offer you an alternative flight to your destination. They must also provide care and assistance, like meals and accommodation, if you’re delayed overnight.
If you booked your flights using a credit card, you may also be protected under the Consumer Credit Act, meaning your card provider’s jointly liable to refund you. Alternatively, for debit card purchases, you can try the Chargeback scheme.
So, where does travel insurance step in? It usually covers consequential, out-of-pocket expenses that the airline or your card provider won't reimburse. This might include pre-paid, non-refundable hotel bookings, excursions, or car hire you can no longer use. Cover for these losses is subject to your specific policy terms, so it’s always worth checking your policy booklet carefully to see exactly what’s included.
Because holidays at sea come with their own unique set of logistical challenges, you’ll almost always need a specific cruise policy or a cruise add-on.
Medical emergencies on a ship can be expensive, often involving onboard doctors or even a helicopter airlift to a mainland hospital. Cruise insurance is specially designed to handle these costs. On top of the medical side, it also includes handy perks you won't find on standard cover. Think compensation for missed port departures, reimbursement for pre-booked shore excursions if the itinerary changes, or a payout if you fall ill and are confined to your cabin by the ship’s doctor. When comparing quotes, just make sure you tick the "cruise" box so we can show you exactly what you need.
If you're swapping the beach for the slopes, standard holiday insurance won't usually provide the cover you need. Because skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating carry a much higher risk of injury, you’ll often need to add specific winter sports cover to your policy.
Without this specialist cover, any claims resulting from an accident on the slopes will be rejected, leaving you to foot foreign medical and mountain rescue bills yourself. A good winter sports policy provides essential medical emergency cover tailored to mountainous regions, including off-piste skiing (usually provided you’re within local resort boundaries or with a qualified guide).
Ski cover can also help protect your equipment, covering the loss, theft, or damage of your own skis or hired gear. Many policies will also compensate you for lost days if the piste is closed due to a lack of snow or severe avalanches, and reimburse you for unused ski passes and lessons if you’re injured. Just make sure to select "winter sports" when getting your quotes with us.
At PayingTooMuch, we believe there’s no single best travel insurance policy. Instead, there’s the best policy for you. Our job is to match you with a wide range of trusted providers, giving you the choice and flexibility to find the right fit for your specific health needs, travel plans and budget.
For example, cruise cover isn’t standard on every policy. If you travel four or five times a year, an annual policy could work out cheaper than buying each time. When it comes to pre-existing medical conditions, some policies will cover them while others won’t. Emergency medical limits, cancellation and excess levels all differ from policy to policy.
Comparing with us helps you see the limits, exclusions and prices of many travel insurance policies side by side, and choose the best fit for your individual circumstances.
Travel insurance generally covers you if you become ill before your trip and are forced to cancel your holiday, provided you’ve got cancellation cover included in your policy. If you fall seriously ill or sustain an injury and a medical professional confirms you're unfit to travel, your insurance can reimburse you for the non-refundable costs of your trip, like flights, accommodation, and pre-booked excursions.
However, there’s a very important condition: you’ll usually only be covered if the illness was unpredictable. If you have to cancel your trip due to a pre-existing medical condition that you already knew about but didn't declare when you bought the policy, your claim will almost certainly be rejected. To make sure you’re fully protected, you’ll need to declare all pre-existing medical conditions accurately when comparing quotes with us.
Financial gurus like MoneySavingExpert’s Martin Lewis recommend purchasing your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday, so you're protected against unexpected illness before you depart.
It’s a classic myth that travel insurance is only for overseas travel. While you won't need it for medical emergencies (thankfully, the NHS has that covered), consumer experts still highly recommend packing a UK policy for your staycation.
If you have to cancel your getaway due to sudden illness or redundancy, your insurance might help reimburse you for expensive cottage rentals or pre-paid train tickets. Plus, it can cover your luggage not already covered by your home contents insurance if things go missing or step in if you face severe travel delays. Just bear in mind that most insurers have a minimum requirement for a UK trip to qualify, usually two or three consecutive nights of pre-booked accommodation.
Travel insurance is designed to protect you against unexpected financial losses and medical emergencies while you’re away from home. When you buy a policy, you pay a premium to an insurance provider, and in return, they agree to cover the costs of specific unforeseen events detailed in your policy wording.
By using our price comparison service, you can easily weigh up different levels of cover to find the one that fits your exact needs and budget. If something goes wrong, for example, if you need emergency medical treatment abroad, your bags are stolen, or you have to cancel your trip due to a sudden illness, you submit a claim to your provider. If the claim’s valid under your terms and conditions, the insurer will reimburse you or pay the medical bills directly, minus any agreed excess.
Always compare policies carefully and read your Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) so you understand exactly what you’re protected against.
In travel insurance, an excess is the fixed amount of money you agree to pay towards the cost of any claim you make. For example, if you have a claim for £600 of stolen luggage and your policy has a £50 excess, your insurer will deduct the excess and pay you £550.
When comparing with us, you might notice that policies with a higher excess generally come with a cheaper upfront premium. Choosing a policy with a lower or zero excess (sometimes called an excess waiver) will normally make the policy slightly more expensive to buy.
While a higher excess saves you cash today, make sure it’s an amount you could comfortably afford if things go wrong on holiday. Also, keep an eye on how it’s applied. Some insurers charge the excess "per person, per section" of a claim, which can quickly add up if a family loses their bags and misses a flight.
Having too much fun and want to stay a bit longer? Whether you can extend your cover depends entirely on your provider. If you’re already kicking back on a sun lounger and decide to extend your trip, you’ll need to contact your insurer directly.
Some providers are happy to take an extra premium to extend your dates, provided you haven't made any claims and your health hasn't changed. But, it's worth noting that many standard insurers draw a hard line, refusing extensions once a trip has started or enforcing strict maximum trip lengths. If they say no and your policy lapses, you’ll be travelling uninsured.
When comparing holiday insurance quotes with us, you’ll need to declare any physical or mental health condition for which you’ve received a diagnosis, taken prescribed medication, or attended a hospital clinic or surgery for treatment or investigation within the last two years. For some conditions, we’ll ask about your history over the last five years.
It can be tempting to hold back information to get a cheaper quote, but doing so can be risky. If you fall ill abroad, even if the illness seems unrelated to your undeclared condition, your insurer can reject your claim entirely.
Don't worry; our price comparison process includes a straightforward, easy-to-use medical screening questionnaire. Answering these questions honestly ensures that the quotes you see provide cover that will protect you when you need it most. If you aren't sure about a diagnosis, it's always best to check with your GP.
While some standard, off-the-shelf insurers might cap their cover at a certain age, at PayingTooMuch, we believe that travel is for everyone.
Because we compare a brilliant panel of specialist providers, we can help you find the right cover whether you’re 18, 70, 80, or well into your 90s! We do the hard work of matching you with insurers who understand senior travellers and can cover a huge range of pre-existing medical conditions.
If you need to make a travel insurance claim, it’s important to remember that as a price comparison website, we don’t handle the claims process directly. Because you purchased your cover through us by comparing different providers, your contract is with the specific insurance company you selected.
There’ll be a dedicated claims section in your policy booklet outlining the exact phone numbers to call. Try to call them as soon as you can. This is especially important in a medical emergency, as most insurers need you to ring their assistance line before you receive any treatment. It’s also a great idea to gather your evidence early on. Think police reports for stolen gadgets, receipts for out-of-pocket expenses, or official medical certificates.
