Key things to know about travel insurance for Cyprus

  • Beyond GHIC/EHIC: While these cards cover state emergency care in the south, medical treatment, trip disruption, and medical repatriation (which can cost thousands) require a travel insurance policy—especially in Northern Cyprus where these cards are invalid.
  •

  • Health and Safety: Policies protect against high-temperature risks like heatstroke and provide essential personal liability and baggage cover, though claims may be rejected if related to intoxication, unattended items, or undeclared pre-existing conditions.
  •

  • Tailored Cover: Ensure your policy matches your specific needs, such as activity add-ons for quad biking or water sports, and choose between single-trip or annual multi-trip cover based on your travel frequency.

Why do you need travel insurance for Cyprus?

Even though Cyprus is in the EU, it can be risky to rely on just your EHIC or GHIC while you’re there. This is because it only covers you for emergency care in public hospitals. It doesn’t cover the following:

  • Evacuation/repatriation
  • Disruption to your trip
  • Losing belongings or having them stolen
  • Personal liability insurance

Travel insurance does cover these things by enabling you to:

  • Be flown home in an air ambulance if needed
  • Be reimbursed for any non-refundable costs if you have to cancel your trip
  • Not have to pay to replace your lost, stolen or damaged belongings
  • Covered if you damage someone else’s property or hurt them by accident

Is Cyprus classed as Europe for travel insurance?

Yes, Cyprus is generally classed as Europe for travel insurance purposes.

Getting a ‘Europe’ annual policy will usually mean having cover for the entire island. However, it’s important to know that only the Republic of Cyprus, which is the south of the island, is a part of the EU. That means that the GHIC and EHIC cards are only valid here and invalid in the north of the island. If you have a single trip (ST) policy, you can tell us which countries you’re planning to visit on that trip. This helps to make sure you are covered in all of these countries.

What does Cyprus travel insurance cover?

Most standard policies for Cyprus cover the following:

Medical treatment

Cyprus can be extremely hot, with temperatures reaching almost 40 degrees celsius in the summer months. So, related illnesses such as heatstroke, dehydration and sunstroke are more common. Travel insurance can help cover the cost of treatment for these problems and much more.

Repatriation/evacuation

If you become severely ill and can't return home on a commercial flight, you can be medically repatriated to the UK instead. You could also be evacuated to nearby Turkey or Greece if you needed to be treated at a more advanced hospital. Both of these options can cost you thousands of pounds without travel insurance.

If you can’t travel or have to return home early because of an emergency, e.g., a family bereavement, illness or injury, you can be reimbursed for any non-refundable costs.

Baggage and possessions

Cyprus is generally seen as one of the safest countries in Europe1. But it's still possible for someone to steal your belongings. Having travel insurance helps to cover the cost of replacing them if this were to happen.

Personal liability

Protects you financially if you accidentally injure someone else or damage their property.

Travel disruption

Cyprus because of the military action happening in the Middle East2. If you’re affected by this or another reason for disruption, e.g., bad weather/political instability, you can receive money to cover the cost of things like food or alternative accommodation. It’s important to remember the "Known Event Clause". This clause means that you can’t get travel insurance to cover a disruptive event—like a named hurricane or an announced strike—once it becomes public knowledge. To be covered, you must purchase your policy before the risk is officially identified and reported.

What isn't covered by travel insurance for Cyprus?

Undeclared pre-existing conditions

You’re likely to have any claims related to an undeclared pre-existing condition rejected.

Intoxication-related injuries/illnesses

If you got injured or ill because you drank alcohol excessively or consumed illegal drugs, it’s very likely that any claim you make would be rejected.

High-risk activities

Many standard policies often exclude "extreme" sports like paragliding, jet skiing, or scuba diving unless you purchase a specific activity add-on.

Unattended belongings

If you leave your belongings unattended and they are stolen, your claim may be rejected.

Travelling against advice

Visiting areas where the FCDO has advised against travel will mean that you can’t claim on your travel insurance.

Do I need travel insurance for Cyprus if I have a GHIC?

Both the EHIC and GHIC, while they can be useful tools for medical cover, aren’t substitutes for travel insurance. This is because they don’t cover the following:

  • Evacuation/repatriation
  • Disruption to your trip
  • Losing belongings or having them stolen
  • Personal liability insurance

They may be better off being used with travel insurance instead.

For example, let’s say you used your GHIC card with your travel insurance in Cyprus to treat a sprained ankle. Because you have both, the GHIC can cover some of the cost of the treatment in a public hospital, while your travel insurance could cover any follow-ups.

This can help lower the cost of your claim and help to keep your future premiums low.

Which type of policy is right for your trip to Cyprus?

The ‘right’ policy for your time in Cyprus depends on your circumstances and what you’d like to do while you're there. For example, if you’re planning to travel to Cyprus, or another European country, multiple times in a year, an annual multi-trip policy might make more sense. It can be more convenient, as it saves you having to take out separate policies each time you travel, and offer better value for money than a single-trip policy.

But if you’re only planning to visit Cyprus once this year, then you'd be better off with a single-trip policy.

If you have any pre-existing conditions, making sure your policy can cover these is a good idea. Depending on the insurer and the severity of your condition, you might need to find a specialist insurer that covers pre-existing medical conditions.

Checking the level of cover you get is important too. If we take cancellation cover as an example, the level of cover has to match the total cost of your trip; otherwise, you may end up losing money.

Activities matter too; a policy for relaxing on the beach is unlikely to be enough if you decide to go quad biking. You’ll need to get activity-specific add-ons to make sure you are covered.
