What is family travel insurance?
Family travel insurance is no different to normal travel insurance, it just covers your family under one policy. So, instead of having to keep track of a few different travel insurance policies, you only have to worry about one.
If you pick ‘family’ when getting a quote, you need to be one or two parents travelling together with your child or children. You need to live together, be the legal guardian and the child or children must be under the age of 18 (or 21 if in full-time education).
At PayingTooMuch we know that not all families look the same and no family holidays look the same. So, if your family doesn’t look like this, when you’re completing your information, you could select group that covers up to ten travellers, who don’t have to be related, but can be.
How do I buy travel insurance for my family?
We’ll do all the hard work for you and compare travel insurance for you. No more searching on lots of websites or spending all your time looking for the right insurance for you. We’ll compare multiple providers to find you a final list of quotes to choose from.
Step 1: Tell us about your travel plans, including when and where you’re going and how many people you’d like to cover. By doing this, we can tailor the quotes to your trip.
Step 2: Add any additional cover you might need while you’re on holiday. If you’re planning on going on a cruise or skiing, you should let us know to make sure you’re covered for extra activities.
Step 3: You need to let us know if you, or anyone you’re travelling with, have any pre-existing medical conditions. This means that we can find a policy that covers these conditions, so you don’t have to worry.
Then, just look through your quotes and pick which insurance provider gives you the right cover for the right price for you.
What do I need to know before buying family travel insurance?
Buying travel insurance for your family is no different to buying it for yourself.
You’ll need to make sure you have the below information available for each family member:
- date of birth
- information on any pre-existing medical conditions
You can choose between annual multi-trip or single trip travel insurance. If you’re travelling two or more times in a year, an annual multi-trip policy could be the cheapest option for you. But if you’re only planning on going on holiday once, a single trip policy can cover your exact trip dates.
For annual travel insurance, simply tell us where you’re going. We’ll give you options, including Europe, Worldwide and the UK.
If you’re looking for a single trip, you’ll need to add each country you’ll be visiting to make sure you’re covered.
Can travel insurance cover medical conditions for the whole family?
When you’re getting your quote, you need to let us know about any medical conditions you or your family have. This will help us make sure that your quotes include cover for these conditions. This might mean that you pay more but it should give you peace of mind while you’re away. If you don’t tell us about any of your medical conditions, this could mean that you’re not able to make a claim if you need treatment while you’re on holiday.
If you’re not sure what counts as a medical condition, take a look at our dedicated medical conditions page.
Going on a family cruise or a family winter sports holiday?
If you’re going to on a cruise or looking at going on a skiing holiday, you’ll need to add this to your travel insurance. We’ll ask if you want to include this when you’re telling us about your trip. It’s important that you tell us if you’re going on a cruise or skiing holiday, so that you get extra protection. Rather than this being an extra to add to your travel insurance, we’ll compare different products to make sure you’re covered for everything you need.
Cruise: by picking cruise cover, you’ll get extra cruise-specific protection, like missed ports, unused trips or cabin confinement. You can read more about travel insurance with cruise cover on our dedicated page if you’d like to know more. You can also understand more about what’s included and not included if you travel on a cruise without cruise cover on your travel insurance.
Winter sports: by selecting winter sports cover, you’ll be able to go skiing, snowboarding or take part in other winter sports without having to worry. Your travel insurance could cover you for piste closures, your skis or other equipment, or for medical emergencies. If you’d like to know more about winter sports cover, if you need it and what happens if you don’t have it, you can read more on our winter sports page.
