Can you get travel insurance if you have cancer?
Even if you’re living with cancer, you can feel peace of mind by having travel insurance for your holidays. Simply answer a few questions about your health and if we can, we’ll help you find a policy that’s right for you.
What will I be asked when getting travel insurance with cancer?
When you get a quote, you'll be asked a few questions about your cancer. You might find it easier to gather this information before starting your quote. Some things you might be asked are:
- What type of cancer you have
- When your last treatment was
- What type of treatment you’re having, or going to have
- The outcome of your most recent scan or x-ray
- Whether you need any help day-to-day
Every type of cancer is different, so the questions you'll be asked during the medical screening might vary. But it's really important to be honest and as accurate as you can so you get the right cover.
What types of cancer can be covered?
Some common types of cancer we can cover include:
- Breast cancer: If you’re living with breast cancer, we can help you find the right travel cover that suits your needs. You’ll find support throughout your journey with specialist medical policies. Just answer a few questions about your health to compare travel cover for your next adventure.
- Lung cancer: Get peace of mind when you're travelling with lung cancer. Our specialist medical cover is designed to help you get the support you need. Compare cover that includes emergency medical expenses, cancellations and repatriation for your holiday.
- Skin cancer: When you have skin cancer, it's still possible to find reliable medical travel cover. Don't let your condition stop you from exploring the world. Just answer a few questions about your condition to compare cover with no upper age limits, emergency medical expenses and cancellation cover.
If you’re waiting for treatment or undergoing tests for a condition, you won’t be able to get cover.
Is there any type of cancer that can’t be covered?
Some types of cancer can be harder to cover than others. If you’re undergoing several different treatments, going somewhere with high medical costs, or you’ve been diagnosed with metastatic cancer, this can make it harder to get travel cover.
We won’t be able to offer cover if you’re:
- Waiting for tests, test results or investigations
- Waiting for surgery or to be discharged from post-operative checks
- On a waiting list for treatment or investigation
or
- If your cancer has been diagnosed as terminal
If you have questions about getting cover for cancer, you can speak to our friendly customer service team who will be happy to answer your questions. The Money Helper directory is a helpful list of specialist medical insurance providers, who also might be able to help if we can’t cover you.
What should travel insurance for cancer patients cover?
Even if you're living with cancer, medical travel insurance policies should be built to suit you. A typical policy includes cover for:
- Medical emergencies (including repatriation)
- Cancellations
- Travel disruptions
- Accidental damage or injury
- Baggage
- Loss, damage and theft of personal items
What won’t be covered?
There are a few things that won't normally be covered by your policy:
- Travelling against the advice of your GP or hospital consultant
- If you don't get recommended vaccinations for your destination
- Routine treatment abroad, such as chemotherapy and dialysis
- Continued treatment abroad, such as injections
- Travelling for medical treatment
