On Wednesday, earlier than expected, the UK Government announced changes to England’s travel traffic light system.
We'll go through all the changes below, but the most crucial difference is that the list will now be updated only at three-week intervals. This welcome change will bring more stability and confidence to the system, which was changed weekly last year and in an ad-hoc fashion this year.
So for three weeks at least, from 4 am on Sunday 8th August, you can be sure you will not have to change your holiday plans at the last minute.
The changes currently only apply to England, but Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to follow suit.
Remember, the traffic light system is only for arrivals back into the UK. Check the GOV website for entry requirements into other countries.
Germany, Austria and Norway among new green list countries
Seven countries have been moved to the green list, which does not require quarantine on your return home.
These countries are Austria, Germany, Latvia, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia.
France is just amber… again
Following the controversial decision to place France on a new 'amber plus' list three weeks ago, France returns to the standard amber list. If you are fully vaccinated, you don’t need to quarantine on your return from an amber list country.
Spain remains on the amber list, to the relief of many holidaymakers, despite rising case numbers. Although not a requirement, the UK Government requests that Brits returning from Spain take a more expensive PCR test instead of the cheaper and quicker lateral flow test.
Additions to the amber list are Bahrain, India, Qatar and the UAE. If you arrive in the UK before 4 am on Sunday 8th August, you’ll need to quarantine in a hotel. Talking of which…
Red list hotel cost rises
From 12th August, the cost of mandatory hotel quarantine will rise from £1,750 to £2,285 for a single adult and £3,715 for a couple. Children aged between five and twelve will remain at £325, and children under aged under five are free.
