Don’t miss out on an insurance payment, make sure you are covered!
The last thing you think will happen to your car when you park inside a multi-storey car park is for it to incinerate whilst you are walking around the shops. However, that is exactly what happened to people in Liverpool who had parked in the Liverpool Echo multi-storey car park in King's Dock on the 1st January 2018.
Reports are that over 1,300 cars were destroyed or suffered extensive damage when it was engulfed by the 1,000C blaze. The Association of British Insurers estimate that claims amounting to £20 million will be paid out to motor insurance customers, and added that drivers with comprehensive and third-party insurance would be covered.
But a recent study has suggested that 1 in 13 cars on the road in Liverpool are uninsured, with the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) reporting that over one million cars on the road (1 in 38) in the UK are being driven without insurance. This means that around 100 cars caught up in the blaze could have been uninsured, missing out on much needed insurance payments.
The MIB, which compensates victims of uninsured drivers, has revealed the number of accident claims it receives has risen by almost 10% to around 12,000 a year in the past 12 months. As a result, it has paid out around £256 million to victims in 2017 which adds an average of £15 to each motor insurance premium.
