Whether you are going on holiday or travelling the world, there is one thing that causes us all a headache and that is how much (or even what) to pack before you go.
There’s a tendency to pop as much as possible into your suitcase, just so you don’t have to deal with the horror of realising you’ve left something behind. But here at PayingTooMuch.com we know that sometimes you can pack light and still pack effectively!
So here’s some useful hints and tips to help you pack light.
Check your limits
Firstly, check your airline’s baggage policy to find the maximum dimensions and weight you’re allowed for your bag. Then find the biggest bag you can, within those dimensions, and make sure you use scales after you’ve packed to ensure you aren’t overweight.
Failure to pack effectively could land you with fines for having overweight luggage. These are not only costly, but could put a strain on a trip that is supposed to be stress free and relaxing.
Be harsh
One of the simplest ways to pack light for your trip is to be tough.
Have an idea of what you want to pack? Spread everything out on the floor and look it all over. Think about whether or not you will really have a need for everything and if there is any doubt in your mind then leave it behind.
After all, you can often find exactly what you need whilst on your travels; so if you realise you really need that snorkel then you can pick it up on holiday!
Pack for best case, not worst case
The temptation when packing is to ensure that you have all bases covered. Whilst this seems like a sensible approach, the truth is that a positive outlook might do you better.
Worried that it might be cold where you are heading? Pick clothes that can be layered rather than thick heavy items. Wondering if you might need five swimming costumes? Two on rotation will probably do!
Share the essentials
If you’re travelling with a friend or partner, share toothpastes, shampoos etc. Remember to take your own clear plastic bag or you may find yourself paying for bags at the airport. And remember those liquid rules – maximum 100ml of gels, liquids and waxes.
Research your hotel beforehand. Do they have pool towels and hair dryers in the room? In which case, you can leave those items behind and pack that extra shirt.
Pack tightly
If you find that you have gone through everything and still are short on room, then you might want to condense the space they take up. You can do this in all sorts of ways. Try rolling up pants and socks and putting them inside shoes.
Once the headache of packing is put to rest it is time to look at other important parts of your trip. One thing that you should never ignore is travel insurance and here at PayingTooMuch.com we can help find the right deal for you, leaving you not only more time to roll up those socks, but with more spending money to enjoy once you finally get away!
