About Travel Health Insurance

Travel Health Insurance, Europe and EHIC

If you are traveling within the EU, for business or pleasure, one of the first things you should do is to get an EHIC card. This means that in European countries, you will effectively be treated in the same way as a member of the country you are visiting.

However, this does not eliminate the need for private travel health insurance - many European countries do not have health insurance as comprehensive as the NHS, so even with an EHIC card, you may need to contribute to the cost of your care. Indeed, some countries will ask you to pay upfront, whilst you are reimbursed via your EHIC card at a later date. Good private travel health insurance should prevent this need arising.

Travel Health Insurance - Medical Cover and Other Features

Use our "Overall Average Cover Indicator" to see the amount of cover for Medical Expenses on every insurance policy. There are a large amount of minor conditions which are covered on a standard travel insurance policy, but for peace of mind check the cover details carefully.

Private travel health insurance should cover you for medical expenses outside of EHIC, and even additional items such as lost baggage or cancelled flights.
